Iaspis: The name for jasper comes from the Assyrian ashpu, the Hebrew jashpeh. Several countries produce it: India has a jasper that resembles emerald; the island of Cypress has a hard jasper that is a full sea-green color; Persia has a sky-blue jasper that is called aerizuse for that reason; the jasper from the Caspian Sea also looks like this. The jasper on the banks of the Thermodon is blue, while that of Phrygia is purple, and jasper from Cappadocia is a sad bluish-purple that has no radiance. It is claimed to cause the milk remaining in the teats of camels to flow, dispel pain and heart palpitations, delay sperm, and cleanse the blood of dysentery, reduce pollutions and banish lust, and, according to Heinrich von dem Türlîn, heal lovesickness. The one who wears jasper is never subject to accident and whosoever girds their body with it will fufill all their wishes. Jasper is a male stone, while jasmer (Eastern jasper) is female.

According to Marbode of Rennes, there are seventeen different kinds of jasper (a number that varies in the texts), but the best is translucent green. When carried, it repels or heals fevers and dropsy, and it facilitates childbirth but also has contraceptive virtues! When blessed, it makes one gracious and powerful and drives off dangerous phantasms. However, Mandeville says women should not wear jasper because it will make them sterile. With the help of incantations, jasper can confer beauty, prowess, and invulnerability, eliminate fevers and dropsy, and retain the blood from wherever it is flowing.
